The issue here is the presence of the Ta'if Agreement, which reduced Lebanese Christians to irrelevance politically. Under the Christians there was more freedom, but Islam is incompatible with freedom and democracy unless everyone is a Muslim in the country.

actually the SLA wasnt a christian group but an army that first started as a DEFENCE against syrians & PLO terrorists attacking lebanon. Their alliance with israel was do or die at first.
