Why Grab land, Zimbabwe Mugabe?

President Mugabe wanted to take back 1/3 of all Zimbabwe's productive farmland from white farmers and give it to the country's peasants. In 1998, a mere 4,500 wealthy whites owned a staggering 50% of Zimbabwe, and Mugabe says they had until August that year to give that land back.

Mugabe did not answer the question "what happened?" on British reneging on their promise to finance land resettlement. It is because honest answer is not in his favour. Here is what happened: it appeared that the farms that have been bought with British money have not been used for resettlement of landless, but were given to senior officials: Mangwende - agriculture minister, Shiri - Mugabe's cousin, Utete Mugabe's advisor, Chihuri Chief of Police, Tawenga Harare's Mayor and many others.
