I don't worry about spring life that much. When a magazine stops having sufficient tension, I get another spring. They are more likely to fail due to damage or a broken follower or floor plate, than spring tension. If you are storing a magazine in a safe or just for keepsake, unload the magazine. For a carry gun or a home defense gun, load them...period.

I was under the impression that springs actually dont fail from memory, but rather the compression and decompression of the tension on the springs. I have been told both things and Im a lil confused.
Also as far as taking years, are we talking like 5 years or 50 years? My Uncles has a colt 1911 that was produced in the late
70s that has been his carry gun for years, and has had only a few hiccups from the 2 magazines he has. Maybe he just got lucky? Hope to hear the truth for once.

If you leave a magazine loaded the spring will fail sooner. I have taken magazines out of old guns that have been sitting up for years and they work fine. Loaded, they may fail. Older 1911's don't have quite the close tolerances that some newer ones do and don't require perfect magazines. Tight guns need strong springs. Wilson and Chip McCormick have good ones. Chips Powermags are great. You are right, a spring staying compressed is bad. Don't ever stretch a spring to give it new life.

Generally, if you drop it in the dirt, break it down and wipe it off like the video shows. Otherwise, maybe once a year or so. If you are storing them for very long periods of time, not a bedside gun or a regular use gun, but, one that stays in the vault, unload the magazines. The springs built memory and ultimately fail. Takes years, but, it happens.
