@heilong79 I don't dispute dominance concepts in animal behaviour, I only dispute its place in dog behaviour. I don't think there is any evidence to support humping as a dominance ritual in domestic dogs, and I know from my own and other's experiences that humping nearly always happens in environments that contain something stressful, or otherwise arousing. Dominance is not a theory in dog behaviour; it's only a hypothesis. Canines have no need for traditional dominance relationships.

@mydogkanskidrums alot of folk try and dispute the Dominance theory feeling like they have had a revelation that others are somehow missing, IMO the act of humping is in line with keeping a hierarchy, it prevents fights and keeps the peace, ignoring a behavior as obvious as what is in front of you is wrong. You dont have to be totally for or against the dominance theory, take a little from camp B and a little from camp A, these ideas are all theory...not fact.

@heilong79 Sexual behaviour is to due with overarousal; overarousal is to do with an increase in the Norepinephrine chemical in the brain. This chemical increases in new, novel or stressful environments and can prompt hostile and aggressive behaviour. Humping is a sexual behaviour, so a dog that humps a lot is most likely being stressed by something in the environment, and is most probably insecure NOT 'dominant'. Please, don't take the dominance myth as fact- there's more simple explanations.

@joshacio Thats cause he thinks he is king, the humping is not sexual it is a show of dominance over whatever/who ever is at the other end of the hump, hopefully not a human, if he is humping people then its training time, let him know who is the boss.

I have a one year old malamute girl. She's ever so sweet. Everyone warns us never to let her off leash but we've come to find she walks a lot better off leash than on. She never runs away, she's always by our side. Once we hook her up to a leash, her instincts tell her to pull. She's very loving towards children and strangers as well as other dogs. I couldn't have asked for a better dog. :)
