We camped in the Shuswap River Valley, downstream from Sugar Lake, when the sound from this bird had us puzzled. The next day we heard it just before dark and I got these rather poor images for the sake of the soundtrack. Members in our party thought it to be screech Owls, but my little research would make them Greater Sooty Owls, they looked a little taller then 1 foot and had no ear tuffs.
Can someone confirm the name.

  • Thank's, you confirmed our search to identify this bird correctly, apparently young birds can sound similar to other members of the group.

  • That looks like a Barred Owl. Sooty Owls are native to Australia. Screech Owls are much smaller than that.

  • Wow, that's pretty cool. Owls are such pretty birds.
