Quote from technical expert: Another thing which scares me about the NBN is that the government becomes basically the de-facto controller of the internet, they own and can control internet access in Australia (well everyone using the NBN). The Labor party have also co-incidentally been also wanting to implement internet filtering/censorship, and the only reason I believe they havent yet and have backed away from it for the time being is due to the uproar it caused from the likes of the ISP community (especially iiNet), which brought the issue of internet censorship much more into the public lime light, and the potential negative effect this attention would have on the election. (Interesting reads: http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/outright-lie-that-iinet-supports-filter-201... , http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2010/06/iinet-busts-conroy-for-spreading-misinforma... )

If the NBN was completed and the majority of australians used it, guess what, it suddenly becomes stupidly easy for them to not only censor the internet, BUT also incredibly easy for them to log every single thing you do on the internet, and keep a history, potentially forever. I dont know about you, but that scares the beejuzes out of me. I mean, technically, they could still do this (but they have to force the ISP's to do it, and as iiNet have shown, they dont like this idea either and go public), but with the NBN, they could do it overnight (legally or not, technically its easy). (interesting read: http://www.smh.com.au/technology/blogs/the-geek/superfast-broadband-or-intern... )

And there is more: wireless technology is reported to be on the cusp of achieving speeds in the order of NBN. We are a mobile society. Why be tied to a fixed line to get high speeds when you can vote in the Liberals who will put the money into encouraging wireless technology?

And better yet, satellite technology is getting better and better for our rural people.

How good is that?

  • Conroy is on record as supporting the internet filter, and then delaying the filter, partly because of the outcry from isp's like iinet. I will post a few links for you to consider in the description.

  • Q: How will Labor deliver something as tricky and complex as the NBN?

A: Take a look at the people who are working for NBNco, they all SERIOUSLY know their stuff.

Your example of BER, Pink Batts - they were not ran by super qualified builders.

NBnco is run by super qualified people who have worked in telco's

  • Q: I like to use the internet on the run, will NBN make faster wireless?

A: Yes, many people cannot currently get DSL, so use wireless. As people move from wireless to NBN, it will free up the congested airwaves. Furthermore, the money NBNco are giving Telstra to allow them the use of their ducts and pits will surely be invested into wireless.

  • Q: So how fast is the international "pipe"?

A: There is not just one pipe, there is several, the international pipe is NOT the issue.

Most of the current international pipes are running 10Gbit wavelength technology.

It could EASILY be upgraded to 100Gbit wavelength technology, but it's not needed. We hardly put a dent in our current international capacity. But, more cables are being built as we speak - over 20Tbit/s worth

  • Q: 90% of the internet is hosted in the USA right?

A: No, far less than 90%, Europe particularly Germany, UK, the Netherlands and France host alot also, the largest internet exchange in the world is DECIX in Frankfurt, Germany - NOT USA, furthermore data is moving towards cloud technologies, where the content is hosted locally, huge amounts of data are sourced locally.

  • i believe the nbn will be used by government to spy on citizens and to control people, google school spying on students. concider street cameras in england. the need for optics isnt for your download speed but for governments upload speed from you everything else can be achieved with other technology including wireless. DO NOT TRUST THIS LABOR /GREEN GOVERNMENT

  • Hi, can you please post a link to the document where Conroy says the NBN will make it easier to track you online please. I want to use it in a blog post.

    Thanks
