This is traffic stop number eighteen (18) over the last four years of velomobiling, with an unusual twist. My rear view camera suffered a corrupted memory card, so no image of blue and red flashing lights, but you still get to hear the whoop-whoop of the siren. I had already begun to pull over, but I like the sound too.

All of one minute and a few seconds, and I was back on my way.

  • It's funny cause noone can see your legs pedaling, it just looks like your gliding down the street!

  • There's really no one inside, it's "one of those remote controlled road-testing machines".

That's what one person told me.

  • That can make a difference. I'm not a gutter-bunny, and often take the lane, but I'm also fortunate to have a few roads with extra wide bike lanes or shoulders.

Actually, yesterday was the closest I've come to being pulled over. Just out riding through town, managed to get on the route for the parade before the county fair. Realized it once I saw the sidewalks lined with people. Didn't realize I was only about 2 minutes before the parade started. An officer at an intersection didn't like that.

  • If you were riding a velomobile, the spectators might have thought you were part of the parade!

I've discovered that I prefer the higher speed, multi-lane roadways now, as it gives me a narrower lane and gives other road users at least one extra lane in which to pass safely.

On the narrow two-lane roads, I will pull over to let traffic proceed when it's safe to do so.

Were there no signs indicating road closures for the parade?

  • 18? Geez... Been going nearly a year with mine now, no stops at all. Don't have the mileage that you do, but still...

  • At the start of my velomobile riding, I was a stripe-rider, a gutter-bunny, an inferiority cyclist. I still was stopped two or three times during that period. Now I operate in the center of the traffic lane, which is legal in FL on the roads on which I operate. Many police officers are not aware of the law and choose to interpret in such a way as to initiate a traffic stop. It's the safest method to ride and it's legal, proven by my dismissed citations.

    Some states have different laws.

  • It was a surprise to me, but you're right. It's good to run into someone like that now and then. Not run into as in collide, though!

  • That's funny!! The things people come up with! :D Has anyone heard of a remote controlled road-testing machine? I haven't, that's a new one on me!

  • lol Rock on!

I'm pretty sure you're well known at the sheriff office now. Which is a good thing! :) The more cops on your side the merrier!

  • LOL that is odd. Never heard of a velo being pulled, kudos to you for being calm and polite, I think I'd probably get a little annoyed after a couple of times, LOL.

Next time you get a citation try and get on Judge Judy so we can all see it thrown out of court. :-D

  • I think the usual phrase is gutter nutter, at least here in the UK.
