Watching Phelps is anticlimactic. He's a "fish" with a strange body, head gear, headphones, goggles, etc. By contrast, Spitz was the complete Olympic hero--he "earned" each of his medals--through his natural abilities and discipline but also through his dramatic skills and psychological acumen. This was before swimming was an exacting science. It was human drama--the world was more competitive. Spitz represented the nation by staring down his competitors, paralyzing them with his gaze.
