This video shows the first five vibration mode shapes of a "smart" cantilever beam, filmed in real-time at a 30 FPS speed. The aluminum cantilever is equipped with piezoelectric transducers. These transducers are working as actuators (only the two closer to the fixed end) and are driven by a sinusoidal signal with a frequency equal to the resonant frequency of the structure. The actuators are supplied with the sinusoidal excitation signal through an operational amplifier, connected to the xPC Target rapid software prototyping platform.
The first two and the fourth modes are transversal, meaning that the movement is out of plane, while the third and the fifth are sideways and twisting modes. Deformation is visible only in the footage showing the first two modes. The second vibration mode is even less dominant to the naked eye, as the camera footage captures the deformation and movement better than the human eye. Resonance frequencies are located at 8.1, 50.1, 100.0, 139.1, 192.2, 274.4 and 448.1 Hz.
This video is made for the "Noise and Vibration: Emerging Methods" conference, see http://www.novem2012.unina.it for more information.
