You are right , he does this many times when we learn new stuff and he isn't really sure yet what I want from him ... But I didn't find out yet if he only tries to get a treat with that behavior because he likes it or he is actually shy because of confusion (just kidding!:)).
I believe you can learn any dog what ever you want (beyond dog's physical abilities of course). Just the needed time and the right approach varies from dog to dog.
