The wonderful half-scale Hohner "Play and Learn" or "Folk Guitar" ($40 at MusiciansFriend.com) is made for kids to learn on, but is a great beater guitar.
It sounds a little like a classical guitar with its nylon strings, but also like a Ukulele because of its tiny scale. Oddly, it also sounds a bit like a koto, I think -- depending on how you play it. I restrung it with some Martin classical strings, which I'm told help keep it in tune, but honestly it is a struggle. Oddly, some of the string (G, in particular) seems prone to going SHARP rather than flat. I tune the whole guitar up 2-3 steps, as I often play with a capo at 2 or 4, and there's no way this guitar would tolerate a capo.
It's made in China, of wood. It actually looks quite deluxe, to tell the truth.
sounds pretty cool
