this crypt was forgotten about and unearthed in 1929 when local man , william spiers remembered playing in it as a boy . the church above it (the second to be built on the site ) was demolished in 1875 . the original church & crypt date from 1100 ad . built in a recess in a chalk slope with windows just above ground level let in minimal light . its small and a bit creepy but if not for mr spiers it may still never have seen the light of day .
