  • No. As intense as it is, I still prefer Horowitz. Here the notes become a blur in parts, because the speed is overdone. Horowitz has more clarity and brings out the upper melodies better. Also, the magical moment at 1:55 doesn't work for me here, while it is Horowitz' finest moment.

  • @tweriovnzxclb The matter of taste of course.

On my point of view Horowitz dose not bring at all what is locked this music - apocalyptic nightmare and black death with the sound death bell in the base at the end.

The whole Etude is a fear of the end of the world. Here it is painted in a right colours.

  • Wonderful etude! And outstanding performance! Love how Gavrilov handles the tempi and dynamic at the end (it's not the usual rubato). The delayed left hand octaves make the right hand hover over the abyss.

  • You are deadly right!

Scryabin asking to make closing in tempo as never ending frustration going on and the dark bell rings about the death!

  • I put 3 10 min parts of Gavrilov's talks. To my and I am sure not only my regret it was heavely cut before the final production because of too sharp comments, allusions, parallels etc. by Mr.Gavrilov. Therefore it looks not as deep at all compared to what was said in studio and how it was carefully explained.Literaly he was explaining every bar, every phrase, every note. You will easylly spot the cuts in many places as soon as Gavrilov going deeper in the material..

  • It was recorded in 1990 as a big TV productian - "Gavrilov plays Prokofiev, Scrjabin, Rachmaninov and talks with M.Bercly" ( English composer ) It is about the size of 2 concerts plus 1 hour talk and explanation by Gavrilov. Not on the market but was in Videotapes format.

  • To TIECTOCAR:sure I can do this. No rpoblem at all.

  • Moving, Deeper than the ocean. So unaware of the camera, Andre's heart 'speaks' through the piano. Thankyou Andre <3

  • y cut off the last chord???

  • I love Gavrilov!!! Perfect!!!

  • @tweriovnzxclb yes i prefer horowitz rendition due to the clarity but there is something mesmerising and beautiful about watching the young kissin playing it

  • This performance is the absolute. Gavrilov here catches Scriabin's fashinating impulse and fatality. Unsurpassed.

  • I was not familiar with this composer, but after hearing this piece, I want to hear more. I am glad I came across it here.

  • @Puchjok I think you mean the works were discussed with the composer and analyst Michael Berkeley. Great post of a great performance!

  • @classicalPiano1 I apologize for misspelling Puchjok

  • I agree with Pujok 100%. Horowitz recorded this piece twice (that I am aware of) and I prefer the studio version to the live version as a matter of preference. There is no doubt, Horowitz performed it brilliantly and musically. But Gavrilov's performance gives you (additionally) a view into the psyche of Scriabin (in my opinion).

  • I think there is no other pianist with this great understanding of Russian culture - I mean the Russia of Scriabin, Rachmaninov, Dostojewski...

Gavrilov does not paint a blurred picture of "some kind of Russian tragedy". Like Puchjok said Scriabin had very concrete imaginations of abyss. And Gavrilov makes a moving narration of thoughts and feelings Scriabin implicated.

Thank you Puchjok for all the digitizing work you made! Hope to meet you again in CH
