Competing currencies is no good because, since so much of what we consume comes from abroad, we would get serious inflation right away.
Isolating ourselves from an international banking system also won't work because even without NATO ties we are becoming ever more intertwined with other nations' economies.
Free-market economies cannot and will not reduce the gap between haves and have-nots. But more socialism might.
