Race For New Trainers Sparks Violent Scenes

Police have been called to attend several incidents at shops in America, prompted by the re-release of a top-selling Nike trainer.

Crowds who had queued for hours rushed into stores to get their hands on a pair of Air Jordan 11 Retro Concords.

Such was the competition for the black and white footwear, some shopping centres saw fights and stampedes.

In Tukwila, a suburb of Seattle, officers had to use pepper spray to stop brawls breaking out in a crowd of up to 2,000 people.

A police spokesman said the Westfield South Centre mall had entrance doors ripped off and 25 officers were needed to restore order.

One man punched a police officer in the melee:

"He did not get his shoes," said police spokesman Mike Murphy, "Instead he went to jail."

In Indianapolis, three different shopping malls reported incidents, with people losing their shoes and jackets as they tried to beat the crowds to the trainers.

Police in Toledo, Ohio, charged five people with disorderly conduct when would-be shoppers began fighting at 4.30am as they waited for a 5am opening.

The sportswear manufacturer issued a statement saying it was "extremely concerned" at the incidents and appealed for calm.

Within hours of the $180 (£114) trainers going on sale in stores they were being resold online and attracting bids in excess of $600 (£382).

The manager of a sports shop in Nashville had an armed guard walk successful buyers back to their car.

Marquis Porter described it as "the craziest release I've ever seen."
