This is a video made on 24th April 2011 of the 10 bells at Rochester being rung to a bob course of Grandsire Caters. To give an idea of size, the largest bell, the tenor, weighs 30cwt (1500kg) and is 54 inches (137cm) across the mouth of the bell.

  • Why the chimes of Rochester are replaced by the ordinary Westminster chimes after last renovation? I sang in the Dutch choir this summer in Rochester and remember you had special chimes there on the hour strike of the Bells. Not there anymore; what a shame! Big Ben chimes sound everywhere.

The clock was repaired over the last few months and reinstalled this summer. As far as I know, both sets of chimes, Westmister and Whittingtons, can still be selected (the mechanism operates like a large barrel organ). I will find out if the Whittington chimes could be selected in the near future.

  • I did not know it was Whittingtons (never heard of) but it was special in my ears for Rochester. I know its a barrel. I saw it many years ago when we als sang in Rochester with st Martins choir from Hoorn Holland. see 3xw martinuscantorij nl

  • I sang in Rochester Cathedral last summer with the Dutch Saint Martin’s choir and was curious why the chimes on these bells have changed of melody. In the past here was a special Rochester chimes on the bells; I heard them all night when I slept in the boy’s school on side of the cathedral; now we heard the Westminster chimes which are cross signs in the music if you read the notes in a score. So Rochester is blessed all day round. But why did it change; the old tune was more original.

  • @1BODGER95 You can always hear them on Bells Of Kent CD

  • @1BODGER95 Sound quite similar to Westminster Abbey!! Nice sounding, would like to ring here one day

  • beautiful rich sounding ten these!! thanks so much for the video, been dying to hear them!
