Fred Hoiberg is returning to town, this time as the head mens basketball coach. Hoiberg was hired Tuesday as Greg McDermotts successor after his surprising move this afternoon to Creighton.

Bringing him in is the biggest thing weve had since Johnny Orr, current guard Charles Boozer said of the former coach, who coincidentally coached Hoiberg at Iowa State.

Iowa State enior associate athletic director Steve Malchow confirmed the hiring tonight. There was also a team meeting tonight.

Negotiations with Hoiberg, the former Ames prep who was nicknamed the Mayor by teammates during a sterling Cyclone career, began this afternoon, according to Malchow.

From my standpoint, it was an outstanding hire, Boozer said.

The initial reaction around town to the hiring of Hoiberg also was positive.

When I left work today, everyone was talking about it; people were giddy, said Ames physician Jon Fleming. Phenomenal hire.

That was the pulse at Wallabys Bar and Grill in Ames.

Hes what people are talking about, owner Ken Eichenberger said. People are talking very positive about him.

Terms of Hoibergs contract will be disclosed during Wednesdays 10:30 a.m. news conference to formerly announce the hiring.

How can you not be excited to play for a guy with the credentials of Fred Hoiberg? guard Scott Christopherson said. Were all excited about this. Were excited to get an opportunity to work with someone with the success hes had as a player.

Hoiberg, 37, played in the NBA for 10 seasons before retiring in 2005 after heart surgery.

He has been a vice president of the Minnesota Timberwolves after serving the previous three seasons as the teams assistant general manager. Hoiberg was passed over by owner Glen Taylor when Kevin McHale was fired last year. David Kahn became president of basketball operations instead.

Hoiberg has no head-coaching experience.

Anytime you get an opportunity to work with someone like that is a tremendous opportunity, Christopherson said.

Four of McDermotts former assistant coaches — T.J. Otzelberger, Jeff Rutter, Nick Nurse and Jeff Grayer — are in limbo. Their status on Hoibergs staff is unknown.

Athletic director Jamie Pollard was a one-man search committee, foregoing a search firm in hiring Hoiberg.

Recruiting will be the first order of business for Hoiberg, especially with May 19 approaching. Thats the last day recruits can sign binding national letters of intent.

I would think the new head coach will come in and be well aware of that and what our commitments are, and what he needs to do between now and then, said David Harris, the senior associate athletic director who oversaw the program between McDermotts 1 p.m. Monday resignation and Hoibergs hiring.

Among the recruits Hoiberg will try to keep is Melvin Ejim, a 6-foot-6 forward. He was recruited by Otzelberger, as were most of the returning six scholarship players.

If T.J. stays in some capacity, Ill honor my letter of intent, Ejim said. Hes part of the reason I chose Iowa State.

Otzelberger has spoken with the recruits.

I told them that I felt confident that Jamie will hire a great coach, Otzelberger said Tuesday before the Hoiberg announcement. I told them to hold tight and see who is the next head coach and to wait until that point in time to make further judgment.

Harris is aware this is an uncertain time for recruits like Ejim, as well as Jordan Railey and DeMarcus Phillips, the other two who have signed letters of intent.

I just got off the phone with T.J., Railey said Tuesday night. Im excited about it. I think this is a good thing. I cant wait to meet him.

Ejim was more reserved.

Havent really heard of him, said Ejim, but if they call him the Mayor, then that cant be all bad.
