Powerful Movie must see.

I really enjoyed the music especially, good choices. The scene at the Shiv temple by the tree was really awesome, and well the whole end part of the movie. Caught this on IFC today, glad I was channel surfing.

Anyone else think she's singing "Be a whore" at 0:22? Guess that's the fourth choice :P

I agree that we need to consider the skewed representation of India (and the Third World generally) that pervades Western art and media. Whilst this film's story is an important one to tell, I don't like to think that Westerners take it as "the last word" on India and that they suddenly think of themselves as enlightened experts on the issue.

@raccoongirl100 - I agree; being proud of serious issues is nothing to be pround of! Pluuuze! How can anybody be proud of the repression of women???????

This was a beautiful, albeit sad, movie--- worth watching.
This film is controversial, but it was set in 1938, during the British Raj, so obviously many things have changed since then compared to now. Mehta was making a statement about not just Indian faith and culture, but in fact all societies where conservative faith and society often intertwine with bad results. She is making a statement, a shockingly honest one about the plight of widows, especially ridiculously young ones. If you don't like it don't watch it, but it's a fabulous movie

@cptspears1691 Haha whooahh there turbo. Just because I don't have the energy to hate like you doesn't mean I'm some peace loving hippie. I never once said that I wanted people to live in "harmony," because I know that's not realistic. However, I think that people who don't want to learn about world issues are just ignorant pieces of shit (like you). I happen to make a difference in this world, as opposed to just sitting on my fat, lazy, ass and staying secluded in my own little stupid world.
