This tutorial shows step by step how to install 3.55 custom firmware via usb flash drive method, to your PS3 slim or fat!
This allows backing up game discs to PS3 or Downloading new games from torrents (piracy).
YOU CANNOT DOWNGRADE FROM 3.56+

Video Skipper:
1. Format USB drive with FAT32.
2. Make PS3/UPDATE folder on USB. Copy over Official Firmware from sony's website.
3. Reboot PS3 into recovery mode and update from USB.
4. Put USB back in PC and replace official firmware with kmeaw's firmware in step1 folder of download. Put pckg's from step2 onto USB root directory.
5. On PS3, update via removable media. Once done flashing, "install package files"
6. Open multiman.
7. (For downloaded games) Insert Fat32 external harddrive to computer, and create folder called GAMES. Copy game folders inside there.

PS3 Hacking Scene Background (In order from old to new):
- Sony removes OtherOS from the PS3 in version 3.21, which used to allow opensuorce developers to write their own software for their PS3's.
- A separate, underground hacker group named fail0verflow, found a signing key that enabled access to the 'nitty gritty' of the ps3, which opened up the development world once again.
- Soon after, firmware developers started using this key to edit the official Sony firmware updates, to create their own CUSTOM firmware, which enables installation of code that isn't signed by Sony. The main focus of this was to get OtherOS back. Of coarse, there are a lot more possibilities with this, such as piracy, which would not have been found in the first place if Sony never pissed off the development community by blocking them off from tinkering with their own $400 product.
- Sony takes Geohot and other firmware developers to court, suing them with hefty, unnecessary charges, likely to make examples of them. (I find it ironic that Geohot didn't even support piracy in his firmware version)
- Another underground hacker group looks to retaliate by shutting down the Sony servers. Soon after, they realize that this is unfair to the gamers that would like to play games online, and know nothing about what is going on. They put the servers back online. Sony apologizes.
- Another hacker uses the same techniques to gain access to the Sony servers, but this one, for more mischievous actions. This creates law suits for Sony, and customers complaining about credit card information being given away to a hacker. Sony hires a team to secure their networks (you know, cause a major corporation like Sony can't afford to have their network built with security.. they spend it all on advertisement space i suppose)
- Today, the fight continues through firmware updates. Each time an update is available, a "security feature" is added to remove exploits which would allow a PS3 to achieve its full potential. (I don't blame them for this, because piracy is big now.. but they did bring it on themselves) These updates are required in order to access the playstation network and play games online.

@fuckingrko That is not hacking first of all. Second of all, you go online to compete with other players. There is no accomplishment in succeeding when you cheat to get to the top. It is only fun in private/local matches where all players have cheats enabled.

well my ps3 stopped reading disks so i decided to jailbreak it to play games, does it have to have any disk inside it or can i run a downloaded game without a cd? sry for my bad english

@HINGZ123 you can run them all from your hard drive, and you can order a new disc drive for about $50

@JohnyBoy6412 you cant go online on 3.55 since u can backup games and download it from the net and transfer it to your hdd... that sir wouldnt be fair.. so im cool with no online if i want to i can just upgrade it to the latest version firmware but i dont have money for games gonna be honest with u. and i have a laptop for online

im still on 3.55 but cmon guys stop lieing some games cannot work but uncharted 3 i mean most of them the popular ones are getting crcked... BFC3 is crck aswell... plus the showtime player is awesome only on 3.55 its like a video player amp that can play mkv avi formats u cant play on the standard ps3 player... what else yah free plus the psn games and what else no online thats about it sorry for bad english
