The hatch and the button is another great example. It's not WHAT was the button all about and why was it so important to be pushed? The writers brought it into the show to bring out the show's central theme of science vs. faith. It does not necessarily represent a thing but it serves to represent the show's main issues.

In this way everything you see in Lost other than the characters themselves stems from them - the conflict, turbulence on the outside ultimately reflects internal drama.

Locke's visions of the plane crash which resulted in Boone's death made Locke experience the pain of being betrayed and used by something he had placed huge faith in - an issue which Anthony Cooper had provided him with long ago in his past. Such random instances ultimately served to show just how much of a victim Locke was - eventually by the man in black more importantly.

It doesn't surprise me that so many people didn't like the finale but it does surprise me that no one saw it coming. Lost has always been a character driven show hence the flashbacks, flashforwards, and the flashsideways. It was only fitting that it ended all about the characters otherwise it just wouldn't have been Lost.
