In 1928, young heiress Martha Ivers fails to run off with friend Sam Masterson, and is involved in fatal events. Years later, Sam returns to find Martha the power behind Iverstown and married to "good boy" Walter O'Neil, now district attorney. At first, Sam is more interested in displaced blonde Toni Marachek than in his boyhood friends; but they draw him into a convoluted web of plotting and cross-purposes

@Nickcat5 Hey man, I was just stating the facts. Freedom of speech, man!

@ConfusedSponge Before that movie was over,Kirk was a Star. & I'm talking over-all quality of work,Not someones criteria. Barbara may have been the star of this, (and many others)but the story wouldn't have worked with her alone. I could relate better to the characters of Heflin & Scott.

@ConfusedSponge That was& is her business.

Lisabeth Scott is a lesbian. That figures!

@Nickcat5 Van Heflin was a star in his own right. This was Kirk's first film, he wasn't the star of this film, just a newcomer. Barbara was THEEE STAR of this film. Lisabeth was a popular ( She is still alive! ) actress in her own right. You know back in the days. But her star status is nothing compared to Babs. She ain't got nothing on Babs. This is only Lisabeth's 2nd film. Maybe her acting was still improving. I don't know. Or maybe I am just too big of a Stanwyck fan.

@ConfusedSponge It was a 4 star movie,Heflin,Scott Douglas & Stanwyck. Acting abilty not good? Check her resume' & what she was in. Non-too shabby. Her vioce was her own & no one ever coached it.

@Nickcat5 Stanwyck was the real star in this film. Scott, maybe a pretty face. That's about it! Acting ability, not really good. She was trying to hard. Has somewhat of an identical voice to Bacall. But she ain't no Bacall.

I could have sworn Toni (the girl from the boarding house) looks just like Sue Lyon from Lolita...
