In the spirit of the 1950s, my friend Trey and I decided to try out three-panel moviemaking. This is our first attempt. We need to tweak the camera setups, because closeups are totally out-of-whack (as you will see when you watch it.)
Cinerama was a pioneering widescreen system that used three cameras to capture a panoramic image that closely mimicked what the human eye sees. We got it to work pretty well at far distances, but we still have work to do to get it to work at all distances.

  • That was a very interesting experiment.

    Congrats on your iniciative.

Perhaps in your next test you should place the three cameras more distant from each other (but keeping the angles). Maybe that would prevent the overlaping that is noticed when the subject comes close to the cameras (the "actor" appearing on all three panels).

  • We actually did just that! I have another video on my page called "homemade cinerama II" where we improved the setup of the cameras quite a bit. It's not perfect, but it is better.

  • So how were the cameras positioned? Was camera A pointing left, camera B pointing center and camera C pointing right? Or did you try to recreate the projector positions, with A pointing right, B pointing center and C pointing left?

  • The picture on the left was taken with the camera on the right, the center image taken with the center camera, and the image on the right was taken with the camera on the left. I hope that's not confusing.

  • Gentlemen, kindly do a bit of research about Kinopanorama, the Soviet 3-panel system, before you arrive at such churlish statements.
