In her groundbreaking reporting over the past few years, Naomi Klein introduced the term "disaster capitalism." Whether covering Baghdad after the U.S.occupation, Sri Lankain the wake of the tsunami, or New Orleans post-Katrina, she witnessed something remarkably similar. People still reeling from catastrophe were being hit again, this time with economic "shock treatment," losing their land and homes to rapid-fire corporate makeovers.

The Shock Doctrine retells the story of the most dominant ideology of our time, Milton Friedman's free market economic revolution. In contrast to the popular myth of this movement's peaceful global victory, Klein shows how it has exploited moments of shock and extreme violence in order to implement its economic policies in so many parts of the world from Latin America and Eastern Europe to South Africa, Russia, and Iraq.

At the core of disaster capitalism is the use of cataclysmic events to advance radical privatization combined with the privatization of the disaster response itself. Klein argues that by capitalizing on crises, created by nature or war, the disaster capitalism complex now exists as a booming new economy, and is the violent culmination of a radical economic project that has been incubating for fifty years.

  • She didn't denounce traditional capitalism. She's criticizing a narrow branch of capitalism that takes advantage of the disasters of the world. This book doesn't elaborate that point, but if you want to know how, and why this is done, I suggest you read Chomsky's 'Manufacturing Consent'. Also, left, right, centre, moderate, up, down... none of this matters. What this is about is the unalienable freedom of man, and the theft of democratic choice from the citizens of "democratic" societies.

  • Is there anything she says here in this video which is untrue? I'd like to know.

  • @jjrglobal

Sounds a bit weird, there are political parties named that in Canada, very progressive members of the party are Red Tories. define: Noblesse Oblige

  • @DjWellDressedMan

    Progressive Conservatives????? Thats an oxymoron

  • Naomi Klein is a serious thinker and just because someone has money does not make them a hypocrite talking about the evils of Capitalism.

If we didn't have the NDP and then Progressive Conservatives with a big dose of Noblesse Oblige, no healthcare in Canada.

  • Avi Lewis a terrorist ?!! Yeah right...a gay-geek maybe but NO terrorist !!

  • One of the best rips on Mrs. Klein...Bravo

  • This idiot wants to destroy Israel and supports HAMAS. A real fool.

  • What terroristorganizations does Avi Lewis support?

  • Naomi Klein is pathetic, it's pure irony, she is rich as hell from selling tons of copies of her books which just blabber on about the evils of capitalism. And her husband is a full fledged terrorist basically, he makes a business of supporting terrorist organizations against criticism. She touts the most ignorant doctrine which just gets eaten up by all the university political science students (usually with rich parents) who are looking for something to make themselves feel important.
