  • Best to soak the entire board with mineral oil TO POINT OF REFUSAL. Keep oiling it with lots of oil, get as much into the block as possible. You can get mineral oil in the pharmarcy (e.g. walmart, walgreens, etc.). It'a OK to wash the board, but don't soak or flood it and otherwise keep it as dry as possible. Keep it away from sustained contact with heat - that might dry it out and cause it to crack.

  • @logik316 Please don't use anything but mineral oil. Walnut oil will become rancid over time and give your block a stale smell.

  • Geez, all that work just to make a sandwich? I find that brushing off the crumbs, scrubbing the board with straight vinegar, and wiping it down with oil every once in a while is quite sufficient.

Walnut oil. It's often used for preserving wood implements that come into contact with food. It's more expensive, though.

  • great video, i didnt know about the vinegar. great idea! One thing I would recommend would be a butcher block conditioner with beeswax. Howards makes a great butcher block conditioner. It is really easy to make your own(google it). Also you can try putting lavender oil or rosemary oil in your own mix to increase the anit-bacterial properties of the wood.

  • what is good alternative for mineral oil??
