  • Damnit how do you do it??? I've got a MBP 15" 2010, 2,66 GHz i7, 8GB ram, the 512mb version of the 330m and even when I take the graphics to the lowest settings and resolution before i have to letterbox it - but after some time (10-20 min) it gets to about 105°C and just shuts itself off -.-'

  • @TomLovis ibebyi gave a great answer! Play with your Fan controls and make sure your MBP does not overheat.

  • @DWizard07 I already used smcfancontrol before. i postet what the problem was above. now i'm running skyrim on medium-low details and i get between 30 and 60 fps, sometimes dropping to 25 when i'm looking at certain light areas like fire. and my cpu maxes out with merely 83°. It still sucks that I had to take the whole notebook (which wasn't a walk on the beach btw) and reapply the thermal paste because apple was too lazy to do it right - even on a premium pc like a mac.

  • @TomLovis I'm sorry about that - it really sucks. Glad you have better results now!

  • This gives me better hopes for wanting to choose PC over the 360 version. And I've got 8gb installed with a 1680 x 1050 display on my 2010 15" MBP :)

  • @redcloud301 I've spent a decent amount of hours in Skyrim, you'll love it!!!! :)

  • @TomLovis hey dude my macbook used to do that also... but then i went to best buy and bought a 40 dollar laptop cooler. u can get one for 20 but theres a reason the 40 is more expensive.. it wont shut off again

  • @ibebyi I took the whole damn thing apart. I cleaned out the fans and you were right - there was a crapload of dust caught in them.

But the main problem was the thermal paste on the cpu and gpu. I'm pretty disappointed - after spending about 2500$ on my MBP, apple used the cheapest thermal paste, and put so much on there, i would be able to fill up half of my space bar merely with the chunks of it that i was able to peel of the area around the chips. really disappointing for that price!

  • @TomLovis hey a couple tips for you:

    1. Lubbo's Fan Control - changes the intervals at which fan speeds ramp up & uses user-defined settings. If you just leave the settings default you'll notice your computer will stay much cooler. SMCFanControl is the OSX equivalent

    2. Take the back aluminum plate off your laptop after removing the ten tiny screws. Use some pressurized air (ie dust-off) and gently remove the dust from inside your computer. Dust acts as insulation and increases temps

  • @TomLovis and its the cpu thats the trouble heat maker

  • are these on low settings for skyrim? or medium?

  • I've seen better but I'm playing on an alienware you've done a good job making it play on a Macbook :)
