A video about crossing the Onawa trestle in Onawa, Maine. This is one of the highest trestles in New England on a little known piece of mountain railroad which is now the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic (formerly the CP International Line) between Greenville and Brownville Junction. We eventually ran into other people on the trestle and a track crew. When we crossed trains we're running only at night and there was little danger. The little village of Onawa was reachable only by train for many years. A small mixed train called "The Scoot" used to serve Onawa and other tiny villages in the Maine Woods. People used to have to sit in the combine while the train switched local businesses. Getting there isn't easy but it's well worth it.

  • I'm deathly afraid of heights. My sister somehow convinces me to go here once in a while.. it takes me about 45 minutes to slowly make my way to the middle. It's beautiful, but scary as hell.

Also; don't kill the pet fox please.

  • I've been on the trestle a few times and even though it's a cool place, as Onawa is, it's a little scary.

  • @spectrum10 I remember seeing a photo of the two bridges, side by side, as the new one was being built.

  • brave man to spend lot of houres to make and explain this

    thank you and happy 2010

    train on !!!!!

  • The Onawa trestle is a cool place. I've been on it several times and it's scary although I'm not afraid of heights. I'm glad a train didn't come by! My grandfather was born in Onawa and was a guide on Boarstone Mtn. long ago...

  • I model this trestle on my layout ( CP INTERNATIONAL OF MAINE DIVISION ) LATE 1980's

  • I read that the Onawa Trestle was built in 1931. There was a train collision in Onawa in 1919. Does this mean that there was another trestle that they had to replace in 1931?

  • Cool, we have a camp in Greenville.

  • Thats near my camp
