This was filmed at about 9:00 PM on July 21, 1990 on Vince's When I Call Your Name tour, his first as a solo artist. A hot breeze was blowing, it was still about 80 degrees that night in the Sacramento Valley. Vince played in front of probably 150 people at the Placer County Fair in Roseville, CA. I think Vince told me the new album had sold over 100,000 copies by that time.

Vince had just written this song a week or so before, and was not yet on an album. At his Sonora show he performed Pocket Full of Gold, which would be the title of his 1991 album, his second for RCA.

Love the extra long steel guitar solo by Joe McGuffey, and Vince's reaction to how the song comes out sounding!

  • I realize how highly regarded John Huey was, and while I can appreciate that, whether he was truly "The Best" is open to debate. There have been many, many, many fine and soulful steel players over the years.

  • Anyone know who this steel player is?

He sure knows the neck...lots of feeling!

  • Joe McGuffey. Vince said he played with Dolly Parton at one time.

  • Vince is too bluegrass for me! I'm kidding of course, he plays bluegrass very well.

  • I was under the belief that Max Barnes wrote this "song of the Year".

    Otis

  • I think he co-wrote this with Vince.

  • BEAUTIFUL SONG VINCE AND i SURE ENJOYED M,YOUR PERFORMANCE

  • thanx for posting Josh

  • Vince let Joe go and hired John Hughey (w/ Conway Twitty)... the greatest of all time... he tells the story of calling John, saying hey, this is Vince Gill... John said, yeah I know you, you're the one that sings like a girl... LOL!! Vince tells that story with so much love for 'Papa' John... RIP John, the best... just the best!!

  • YouTube needs a "love" button. Our favorite Vinnie song. This IS our sing. We saw him play not long after this sing came out. Still love it and can't play it enough . Genuine true, real, crying Steele guitar, country music at its best.

  • @D10Mullen John Hughey did the steel you hear on the studio version. John used to play for Conway Twitty and then played for Vince before he passed away. He was a great steel player.

  • Great video, catching his reaction to the steel is something I bet even Vince gets a kick out of watching.

  • Just fantastic - thanks so much for sharing this. I remember Vince back then - heck, I remember when a steel guitar was called a hawaiian guitar, and the sound is sooo great; adds a soulfulness to any song that makes it just tear at your heart. Love this!

  • this is our favorite song after 40 yrs together it sounds just like us!!!!!!!!!!

  • I so agree, the sound man loves pedal steel. Great stuff
