PHREB: "We Shall Overcome"

Young women and girls in Bangladesh are subjected to eve teasing (stranger violence) on a daily basis. Men and boys lurk in the shadows or open fields, in front of schools, and places of employment, waiting to verbally and physically harass young girls walking to and from their homes. The prevalence of eve teasing creates an environment where young girls do not want to leave their home. PHREB's research on Violence Against Girls in Bangladesh shows that eve teasing is the most dangerous form of violence that Bangladeshi girls face in their daily lives.These girls drop out of school, quit their jobs, are denied access to an education and are subjected to child marriage.

PHREB works with students and teachers to mobilize them to stand against violence - violence against women, children. Our programmes cover the international human rights charters including the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. We work with students in the hope that their knowledge of human rights becomes their homework. PHREB believes that if we can create a change in the mindset of young male Bangladeshis, we can break the cycle of violence against girls.

In this video female high school students sing, in Bangla and English, "We Shall Overcome" to build self-confidence and empower the students to speak out, demand and access their fundamental rights.
