The government cause the current mess by outsourcing 4000 factories to the third world. The current mess was caused by deregulation of our lending industry, and all that creative marketing, some leveraged as high as 70-1. Everyone wanted in on the action, especially Wall St.
I notice even the small investor eats it up, they are perfectly willing to see their own countrymen jobless so they can earn a few more bucks on their stocks.

louiethegreater, well I havent read the book, so I can't answer this.

The Government caused the current mess with low interest rates. They actually said the sub prime loans were a good idea initially.

If they add tariffs and protectionism - it will be a lot worse. History shows this time and again. I don't know of any economy that recovered by raising tariffs on imports... But I know plenty that got worse.

I'll let you have the last word here, I won't post again.

imre1000: What about that regulation which one would you want to do away with first. Dumping toxic waste in our rivers and streams. Dumping toxic waste in the enviroment, where it leeches into the subterranean water layer. Do you know that in Pittsburg PA. in the 1940s you could not see the sun untill noon for the smoke pollution. Do you want to do away with the FDA, that has kept our food safe for 75 years. You should be aware that some folks will poision you for a few extra bucks.

Na, you need to read Pat Buchanan's book :" The Great Betrayal " You must have been listening to Al Gore when he stood before the media and blamed Smoot-Hawley for causing the great depression. Smoot Hawley as passed 8 months after the market crashed.

Have you looked around at the country lately, how does free trade look. Fifteen million unemployed, 4000+ factories outsourced since NAFTA and MFN for China. Is there a message there.

I don't want Mexican grown vegetables I want American graown vegetables. The point is American Farmers cannot compete with Mexican Farmers.
Just like Ameican labor cannot compete with cheap third world labor, that manufactrues those computers ect. you mentioned.
Thats why america is on the fringe of becoming third world. Tariff would fix that, domestic, farms and industries would flourish vegetables would read grown in USA again, the store shelves would fill up with Made in USA again.

DestroyerAlexandros, you want "every individual to break free from the grip of propaganda" - so... we can have a Marxist revolution and the collective will decide everything for us?
A bit of a contradiction, no?

The free market in general brings down prices and increases quality.

I don't what you consider expensive, but if there was such a good margin in importing mexican vegetables - other competitors would have entered the market and brought costs down.

Like they do with computers, electronics, phones, stationery, building equipment etc.

With all due respect imre, These vegetables were far from cheap for me, the consumer. I can assure you the were dirt cheap for the wholesaler and retailer.

By regualtion do you mean the conditions the plants were grown under, like clean water, limited use of herbicides and pesticides, sanitary enviroment they are processed in, you mean small things like that. There is no way under the sun that American Vegetable Farmer can compete with mexican vegetable farmers, corn; yes, vegetables; no.
