This just goes to show the power of human dedication. Of course they're fast at calculating (which is amazing, yes) but they give up their ability to do well in other things. Its the decision between doing very well in one thing or doing fine in many.

He was doing all this in his head though, without pencil and paper.

My friend that sat next to me in physics could multipy two 5 digit numbers together and get the correct answer before this other kid could finish typing it in his calculator. But he always said it took him about 10 5-10 seconds longer to do 6 digits

that speed is quite normal from where i'm from. (i'm chinese by the way) teachers practically drill the concpts of mental arithmatic into all students at a lower level so they can do simple calculations at a glance.

that is insane... sorta makes me wanna wish i had gone to japan and taken school there instead of living here in N. America teaching my mum english.
the North American school systems obviously need stepping up.
