He was not up to my parents standards, and I knew that. He had longer hair than my brothers, he had a piercing on his lip and the other thing that my parents liked was his clothes; a teal V-neck shirt, skinny jeans and a pair of converse, it was something my brother Nick would put on which comforted them some since Nick was the most serious out of all five of us. But you can't judge a book by its cover.
My parents should've loved everything about Chase, he was everything they wanted me to find in someone; All A's, good morals, close family, didn't do drugs. But still when he left my parents said the last thing I thought they would say.
"He seems nice." Mom commented, this was strange, I thought they would react differently but no, everything was fine.
Everything was fine, I went to school, came home, did my homework and talked to Chase on the phone at the same time, ate dinner, went to cheerleading, came home, took a shower then went to bed. An endless cycle which I loved, I was living in a utopia, and nothing could go wrong. Nick and Jesal broke up and surprisingly Jesal dumped him, she said - a couple weeks before she dumped him- she realized they were two different people. Nick said he understood and went on asking Daniella out, which she obviously said yes to. Kevin meets with Melanee most days - when he can - at her apartment and he seems happy, more happy than I've seen him in a while. Hope moved to Ohio to go to Ohio State for college which is great since I think everyone should go to college and experience it.
One night at dinner Kevin was talking about what happened to them that day while I was at school then Joe slipped in a joke which made all of us laugh.
"So what did you do today Jane?" Nick questioned, half smiling still amused by the joke. I was about to speak until the phone rang, but I still responded since my Dad stood up to get it.
"Well, first I went to homeroom-" I was cut off by my Dad whose happy expression turned sad, "Denise it's your sister."
Why was my Aunt Faith calling, she never did, only on occasion whenever it was one of our birthdays; she lived in North Carolina as well as my cousins and grandparents. My conversation with my brothers still went on as my Mom stood up to walk over to my Dad. She picked up the phone as Aunt Faith spoke, my Mom's face fell, something was wrong I knew that much. So I stopped talking and waited until Mom hung up, her expression was full of sadness, I had to know what was happening.
"Mom what's wrong?" I saw her eyes flicker to me then my brother Frankie, then spoke.
"Frankie go upstairs and do some homework please." Frankie did what he was told and went upstairs. Moments past and she spoke to us, "It's your Grandmother, she's in the hospital, she fell down the stairs and her doctors say her Alzheimer's is in the middle stage now. Jane when is your Thanksgiving break?"
"It starts on Tuesday." Today was Thursday, in one week it'll be Thanksgiving, and I knew what she was going to say.
"We're going to North Carolina, I'll tell the office at your school that you won't be there next week."
Mom never made big decisions so quickly, I knew something was wrong, very wrong and I was worried.
