I doubt my advise will be relevant to you anymore, but I thought I'd still try. You can still record 16:9 footage, even if you're receiving a 4:3 scrunched result. By putting a code in your video tags, yt:stretch=16:9, you can stretch your video back to the original 16:9 format. I don't think there would be much quality loss.
