I was walking to the nearby coffee shop when I heard a strange yet familiar sound coming from the third floor church window along the way. A few years ago I took a world music class that had a section on the old timey tradition of Shape Note singing and I had a feeling that what they were singing. I went up stairs and this video is what I found. Heres a five minute taste of Shape Note singing with an explanation of how it works and its history.
I love Family Circle! Thanks for putting this up!

@29vjGKfg783Gownc: We often do have more people--up to 25 or 30 at a singing. This was a nice summer day, so our singing was upstaged by the weather. :-)

Did you happen to take your world music class from Dr. Minja Lausevic at the U of MN?

Thanks for posting this! An excellent introduction to this kind of singing. If it's OK with you I'll post a video 'response' with some more of this music on it. It even has a couple of the same singers you have on your videos, even tho it's a long way from Minnesota!
