Ludwig van Beethoven's immortal Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27 No. 2, mvt. 1, better known as the Moonlight Sonata. The piece was finished in 1801 and was dedicated to one of his pupils, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi. From the many books I've read on Beethoven, and his letters, it is said that he was in love with her. Their love, however, was not meant to be.

My apologies for the poor video/audio quality. It was made with a 4 year old pocket digital camera. I wanted to hear a good friend of mine play her violin. She lives very far away from me, so a video is what I requested from her. In return, she requested a video from me...Moonlight Sonata was what she wanted. Quid pro quo =)

Performed by ClayJ

**I plan on recording other videos in the coming year (including this one again) with a better camera AND on a proper Grand piano.**

  • Wonderful interpretation and the setting is genius.

  • @riceboii101 Thanks so much for your comment! I'm really glad you like the setting too. I just added another video (finally) - same "old" camera but the setting is a bit "darker."

  • wonderful performances and video

  • Thanks for the compliment.

  • Wow, that thunder in the background goes perfectly with this! You're playing is very good. One time I turned off all the electricity in my house and played Mozart by with candles on my piano and a victorian ruffled shirt on haha.

  • Hey, thanks for the comment! Thats funny you mention your Mozart story, I too recently have turned off all the lights in my piano room and played only by the light of my newly purchased late 18th century candelabra I purchased very cheap at a local estate auction =)

  • Hi Clay,

Nice playing. Cld barely see whats going on initially due to the darkness of it all. I thot it was a cd playing, until I read your intro. Nice & novel way of presenting a performance of this piece. I do agree the rain & thunder in the background makes for good sound effects which complements the piece & enhances the mood & expression of things. Looking forward impatiently to mvt3 frm you - hope a real big thunderstorm comes soon!! LOL

  • Great !!! you are a genius!!

  • You play at the perfect tempo and you have an amazing touch and feeling when you play! Very nicely done!

  • Nice. At first I thought it would be lame with the rain in the background, but as I kept listening I got lost in the sound. I usually compare all versions of moonlight sonata to Wilhelm Kempff's version and they usually all suck (i've heard many) but this however surprised me. Very VERY nice. Slow just like Kempff plays it. Beautiful with the rain, made me wish I was playing this in the rain. Wonderful playing!

  • This sounds so amazing! You're a really talented pianist. I'm playing Moonlight Sonata for a recital coming up and this was the perfect inspiration. Thank you!:)

  • extreme talent man i loved this

  • the rain was a special touch in your video, congratulations! magic!

  • That thunder makes this performance beyond perfect.

  • Semplicemente Meraviglioso!

  • Very cool! You know Beethoven died in the middle of a thunder storm on March 26th, 1827?
