UPDATE 12.35pm: DENSE fog may have contributed to the deaths of two men in a car smash in Melbourne's south-east this morning.
The driver and passenger were killed instantly after the car they were in was reportedly driven into oncoming traffic on the Princes Freeway, Berwick about 7.10am.
Police have identified the driver of the Toyota as a 21-year-old Endeavour Hills man.
The front seat passenger, believed to be aged in his mid-teens, also died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.
The crash happened between Soldiers and Clyde Roads, with dense fog on the roads about that time.
Horror crash: Pictures from the scene
"It appears at this stage the vehicle was being driven in the wrong direction into the path of other vehicles,'' a police spokeswoman said.
It appears that a white Toyota Corolla Seca travelling east has veered onto the wrong side of the freeway and struck three other vehicles travelling west, police said.
Another two vehicles, including a truck, were involved in the crash but nobody else was seriously injured.
Major Crash Investigation officers are at the scene.
VicRoads reported the Princes Freeway is closed in both directions between Cardinia Road, Officer to Clyde Road, Berwick.
Traffic is being diverted via the Old Princes Highway.
Motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes to avoid delays.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the Toyota prior to the collision to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
