The reason this happened is that the Jewish Community in the USA misinterpreted the Torah.
Our code of conduct dictates how the animal is to be killed. But too many Jews started to believe that the meat had to come from ESTABLISHED companies. That's how these midwestern meat facilities ended up monopolizing kosher products.
There were red flags about this as far back as 1995.
