民訴記(53) - 大衛又如何

Hi, this is Kwokman. I talked about Joab last time. Let me talk about his boss King David. The bible is full of compliments to David. God often rebuked kings of Israel for not following the example of David. David always took care of God's orders. Other Israeli kings often worshipped foreign gods. God once said David always did the right thing except what he did to Uriah. Was David such a perfect man? Few biblical characters respected God more than David. He thanked God for blessings as well as tribulations, with songs and burnt offerings. He had a high EQ and knew how to live with or without wealth or honor. When he fled to the Philistines, he pretended to be crazy to avoid suspicion. Not only was he able to preserve his own life in foreign places, other outcasts also followed his lead. Simply put, he's a crowd pleaser. He knew how to please men as well as God. He's an honest person by worldly standard. He took not advantage of others, except Bathesheba and Uriah. Twice he refrained from killing Saul when he could. He dared not displease God. David was quick to admit his wrong doing and wouldn't blame others, except Joab. Since God mentioned Uriah, let me say a few words. David woke up in the late afternoon one day. While strolling on top his palace, he spotted a pretty woman, Bathesheba, bathing. He acquired and impregnated her. Bathesheba was the wife of Uriah, who was serving in the army. David tried to cover his act of adultery by bringing Uriah back home. Uriah came back to Jerusalem but didn't go home. He refused to sleep in the comfort of his home while Israel was at war. Then David asked Joab to send Uriah into the most perilous war zone to be killed by their opponent. After Uriah's death, David married Bathesheba. David's immoral act earned God's punishment, the death of his son conceived in adultery. This wasn't the first time David had interests in another man's pretty wife. Before he became King of Jews, he demanded that Nabal gave him gifts for protection of his assets. Nabal refused and David wanted to kill him. Nabal's pretty wife Abigail came and apologized to David. Naturally it was settled with some gifts. Then God struck Nabal to death and David wasted no time taking Abigail home. With so many wives, was David really good to them? Let's take a look at his first wife Michal, daughter of Saul. She expressed her affection for David when she was a princess. Saul demanded 100 Philistines' foreskin as the bride-price for Michal. David exceeded the requirement by 100%, showing he was quite an eager suitor, be it true love or mere conceit. David was sometimes cocky, as could be seen in his fight against Goliath. Michal also saved David's life by misguiding her father's servants who came to catch David. After David fled, Saul married Michal to another man. When David became king of Israel, he ordered Michal's return, separating Michal from her then husband. Michal's husband wept as he saw her go away. Michal returned to David in the palace. How could she, as a princess, cope with David's new wives and children? David ecstatically danced alongside the Ark returning to Jerusalem. Michal met him with despise. Their relationship continued to deteriorate. Michal never bore David a child. Maybe it's because David was a slick person, he absolutely loathed Joab, who was loyal but unreserved. David repeatedly sought to replace Joab. When David ordered a count of Israelites, Joab warned him of the consequence. David completely ignored Joab's advice and eventually angered God. As a result, over 70000 died in three days of outbreak. David would rather listen to ass kissers around him. When he got old and felt cold all the time, an ass kisser suggested to have a young virgin lay with him and keep him warm. It wasn't like David didn't have enough wives and concubines. Nonetheless, David concurred. They found a fair young girl Abishag who took care of David till his death. It seemed David was living all men's dream life, blessed with wealth, women and children. However, peaceful days in his family were few. His sons murdered each other. His beloved son Absalom once drove him out of Jerusalem. His most glorious days were probably those he spent hiding from Saul and leading a group of outcasts.
