Jay writes songs that are so good that he, himself, has trouble doing them justice :)

there really are some huge "Ouch, WTF!!! moments in these guitar breaks. listen to the outro; we're talking hunting, pecking, but far too often missing the mark painfully. you can see Jay's reaction, and it's a shame on such a great song.

The guitar just went out of tune. See the Bigsby! I have been listening to Brad Rice for 26 years, and have not heard him miss a note, ever.

the magic just isn't there with this line-up. it's sturdy, workmanlike, and serviceable, but Jay needs guys who are better players than himself. I'm not hearing that, anymore. I know he had the great Mark Spencer around for some of the solo albums/tours. are they still connected at all?

Good performance. Wish Hiedorn and the Boquist brothers were still a part of it, but the second Son Volt lineup is pretty good as well. Brad Rice fits well on guitar. He played with Whiskeytown and Keith Urban and has a genuine country style of playing that suits the music very well. Probably the best man Jay could possibly find to fill Dave Boquist's shoes. He did a very good job selecting the musicians in the new Son Volt- you have to admit that.
