Return flight from Jefferson, NC Ashe County Airport (KGEV) back home to Jacksonville, FL Craig Field (KCRG) 3:38min flight with a pee break and fuel stop in Barnwell, SC (KBNL) We spent three days in the mountains and did some mountain flying while we were there.

  • I'm a flatlander, too, and have flown into Ashe County (KGEV). Taking off from runway 28 is pretty interesting with the 5,700 msl mountain right in front of you.

  • Actually....my first flight into mountainous terrain. I trained in Jaksonville, Fl The flat lands! It was a little intimidating flying along at 4,500 looking out the side window and flying below the mountain tops. Had a great time. Flew the valleys on Wednesday day after we arrived.....very cool!

  • @jmillski1 Because the the runway slopes uphill going up 28. If you can't climb really well, there are lots of things you can hit taking off on 28. Runway 10 on the other hand drops off quite well.

  • Excellent. This type of cross country video is rare on youtube. Thanks. Google maps has that car trip as 8 hours 5 mins. your flight was 3 hours 38 mins. I am going to message you. I am really interested in lessons at KCRG and need some advice.

  • When departing GEV as long as the headwind component is less than 6 or 7 knots it's better to depart on runway 10 and land on 28. I try not to depart 28 unless there is a strong headwind, even with a 182 with a STOL kit.
