Plot Summary: 4th century A.D. Egypt under the Roman Empire... Violent religious upheavel in the streets of Alexandria spills over into the city's famous Library. Trapped inside its walls, the brilliant astronomer Hypatia and her disciples fight to save the wisdom of the Ancient World... Beautiful movie.

a) Shows science is a religion. Just an approach to come closer to the essence of the big "?" that mankind has never found an answer to. But a very gentle religion! Allowing for difference of opinion.

b) Shows why it's so important to say NO to all groups that reject difference of opinion and declare some fabricated poppycock fairy tale about the big "?" to dogmatic truth so they do not have to argue or compromise to get/retain power. Shows why a state MUST be secular. Always!

The Christians hate the Arabs but the Arabs are the ones that saved many of the Ancient Greeks's texts and books that were burned at Alexandria by copying them in their language .

When I say Arabs I mean the old Persians ( Iran ) and e.t.c wich now the 'WEST" hates . But , would there be democracy in the "West" if the ancient texts would not survived ? Could the French have a revolution ?Answer: No.

And never use the christian word:Pagan .

It does not exist in my dictionary .

I totally agree with you. One of the many reasons that Sov. Union collapsed is that the government has suppressed other views and one of them is religion. Suppressing religion do more harm than good. I completely agree with you. But I'm not saying we must suppress religion. We must have honest discussions about it. But if one wants to be intellectually honest all kind of bias and superstition must be put aside and try to answer ''Does God really exist?''.

Believing without evidence cause harm - to you and to community.If you can't justify your beliefs you do not care about the truth but simply believing in what you like.This is not a rational person! He cannot contribute completely about gaining knowledge which is the primary cause of the advancements of our civilization.You have no evidence whatsoever to state that the atheism in communist countries caused its collapse. There had been other reasons - tyranny and less democracy.

@lachezar43 And yes, I do realize that they are two different types of economies, but eliminating religion, along with supressing free thinking and other beliefs caused the process of collapse to be sped up in the Sov. union. In USA, religion was recognized and set apart from the government- this separation made the state stronger, and it also allowed people to believe in whatever they wanted, and prevented a lot of internal conflict.

@lachezar43 How has considering faith useful and inspiring caused great suffering? I would say that when leaders recognize the power that religion has over people, they are more able to accept peoples beliefs and listen to their people, rather than persecuting them or forcing them to be secular. For example, the Soviet Union had no official religion (communism wasnt a religion in peoples minds). And they collapsed after a century. USA recognized religion from the start,& it is now world power.

This movie was about intolerance for others and illustrates that all religions and beliefs are susceptible to fanaticism, power grabs and control. It's not necessarily about one religion, but every religion. This was a much needed movie in this age when we in the West think Christianity is so righteous, it too has a dark side. On another note, I cried when they stoned her, it was horrific and brought to mind the anti-knowledge element that is present in society today!
