The History of the Payment Card Industry

Started as an independent body in response to the confusion and anger merchants were expressing about the complexity and difficulty when following 5 different rule sets. The five credit card companies came together around the end of 2003 with the goal of providing a single standard.

The PCI SSC is the payment card industry security standards Council that sets and maintains the standards that merchants must meet.
