TOUR:
My video serves as a response to the effectiveness of "soapbox" rants on youtube. (ex: http://www.youtube.com/user/patcondell)
Do soapbox rants on YouTube actually constitute a boundless, democratic intellectual forum? Is video a more effective platform for promoting opinions than a written blog? Here are some comments on these topics, and on YouTube's potential to evolve into a more optimal intellectual commons.

  • YouTube can be whatever you use it to be, and it's genius is this very characteristic. Delainemureno's desire for youtube to 'evolve' into a "democratic forum...universal classroom" seems far from the function of youtube. It should not be pigeon-holed into anything.

  • I agree that expression is probably more effective using an actual camera and a person's voice, rather than something written. However, I do see youtube's current style of presentation as quite informal. That being said, I think currently something that is written is more familiar to people and therefore more of a formal way of getting ones point across. Like this student said, there is room for improvement in which the youtube can become a solid way of portraying the formal messages for all

  • TOUR #1: EDUCATION. Delaine's self-referential performance, as is true for many successful YouTube videos, does and shows the thing itself: in this case the unsettled and unsettling separation of the Aural from the Visual, the Cyber from the Real. For more, see my blog: aljean at wordpress dot com. Also, you can join the tour by adding comments or video responses. Make sure to label them as part of the tour.

  • what frees text-based communication from self-editing and bias? editing can be more easily hidden in text communication

  • How is your discussion about sincerity and performance, created through jump cuts, self-referential?
