He probably based them on the elves, or maybe the Aesir, from Norse myths, just like he did the rest of his writing.
You know that these depictions of elves are a little different than the ones in his book, right? Tolkien's are less ethereal, more down-to-earth, and much more grounded in their relationship to nature.
So yes, I suppose these elves are a little like angels from Christian mythology, which makes them somewhat un-canon in their portrayal of Tolkien's ideas.

this music makes me feel like ive wondered into an elven land like mirkwood, lothlorien or rivendell and can feel a soft light that makes me feel warm and can feel the magic and tenderness of the power of the elves. i wonder if tolkein based elves on angels
