Circuit: Port Royal Speedway
Race: Labor Day County Fair
Vehicle: Blue & White # 11 Ford powered Modified coupe owned by Al McClure Motors of Troy Pa.

Harold Hoose, a resident of Troy, Pennsylvania, had been a top-rank stock car driver on the East Coast for many years, driving in the Atlantic Stock Car Racing Association (ASCRA), among others. On Labor Day 1958, he was racing in an Australian Pursuit at the Juniata County Fair, near Port Royal, Pennsylvania. He lost control of his stock car on the back stretch after a tangle with Leroy Felty and Pete Swarmer and flipped multiple times coming to rest just off the track in turn three . His seat belt broke loose and he suffered head and chest injuries. He was rushed to the P.S. Black hospital in Lewistown, but was dead upon arrival.

  • Wow , there was nothing left of that old modified ...

  • Wow, I just came on this by conincidence. Unbelievable footage. I was there and 7yrs also. My Dad and Nelson Swartz had a hodrod also #93. Thanks for sharing this!!

  • This is what happens when one types something prior to having coffee and early in the morning. Spelling errors "opps" Hopefully one who reads the below two , understands what I was trying to convey.

When I was 17, I rolled a hopped up VW while racing another on a straight away, no seat belts or roll bars. I was ejected on the 3rd roll. I was like rag doll in the car while it was rolling wildly and flying through the air. I can relate to Hal Hoose. I suffer chest injuries and broken ribs.

  • I grew up during this time frame in Maine. Neighbor build cars from ground up late 50ies and early 60ies and raced at beechridge speedway and other tracks. Safety feathers where always lagging behind for the safety of drivers. Fflat head V8 to the new V8 changed the power ratio of the car. The cars of the late 50ies had high center of gravity and narrow wheels versus the changes which occured during the early 60ies. Where there any lessons learned from Hal Hoose this accident?

  • I have review this video numerous times. A chain of events appears to casuse this. One car spinning out, another car avoiding and tagging the right rear wheel of Hal Hoose causinng him to loose control. If one studies the film, just seconds prior to the accident using film adjustment you can see him in his race car, a ghost from the past. It appears in the wreckage of his car his safety roll system failed too. Interesting to view unedited film from this accident. Where is the car now?

  • man i remeber this race i was 5 years old I lived in Newport pa port royal was just up the road

  • rest in peace mate, nice to see old footage of early racing in any form, but never when a racer is killed, but what a time that must of been, freedom and old hot rods every where cheap, if you could afford them as well..
