The United States established diplomatic relations with Pakistan on October 20, 1947. The relationship since then was based primarily on U.S. economic and military assistance to Pakistan. The history of US Pakistan relations is more than 60 years now and mostly, US had relations with the dictators who served Pakistan such as Ayub Khan in the 50's, Zia-ul-Haq in the 80's and Musharraf in the 2000's.
This package takes a look at the strategic efforts put by both Pakistan and USA for the past couple of years but the desired result of which are yet to come.
Pakistan has lately become more vocal in its opposition to the drone attacks which was not the case in the past. The people of Pakistan are taking drone attacks and CIA contractor Raymond Davis' case as an attack on their sovereignty which is putting more stress on the relations between the two countries . Pakistan is accusing USA of not giving the aid it promised to Pakistan while US officials are blaming Pakistan of having safe heavens inside its borders for the Taliban, and not doing enough to change the situation.
Former US ambassador to Pakistan, Bil Milam says that relations between the two counties were always rocky and both the countries were unable to use the strategic dialogues as an opportunity to get the things fixed.
Shuja Nawaz of DC-based think tank Atlantic Council says that both the countries are playing a chess game with each other which has now turned into a checkmate situation.
