RICHFIELD [WMAT News] Memorial Service for a local Marine recently killed in Afghanistan was held Sunday.

The memorial service for Gunnery Sergeant Robert Gilbert II was held Monday at Revere High School in Richfield Township. Gilbert was a 2000 graduate of Revere.

Gilbert was injured by a sniper round during his 5th tour in Afghanistan. He died on his 28th birthday with his family beside him.

Major General Paul Lefebvre posthumously awarded Gilbert the Bronze Star. At the age of 28, Gilbert was one of the youngest in the history of the Marine Corps to reach the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
