"Crying Song" is one of more than a dozen short movements from "¡Chayraq!: Rough Guide to a Modern Day Tawantinsuyu." In composing this piece for the Silk Road Project, Gabriela Lena Frank drew on Peruvian and Chinese influences, ethnomusicology research, and her own observations of music at indigenous festivals while she traveled in Latin America.

"¡Chayraq!" was commissioned by the Silk Road Project. The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma performed this piece at Harvard University's Sanders Theatre on March 27, 2011. In this performance are Yo-Yo Ma, Wu Man, Colin Jacobsen, Shane Shanahan and Mark Suter.
