Ampex ATR100 running at 30 IPS and stressed with a simulated ovalized reel hub in playback. This is the only existing recorder that can play within original W&F specs even with highly irregular shape of the reels. The recorder was shown at AES in NY in 1976, still perfectly working, using two squared hubs instead of normal. It seems that Studer engineers had a strong headache that day....

DON'T TRY THIS WITH ANY OTHER MODEL OF REEL RECORDER OR YOU WILL SERIOUSLY DAMAGE IT AND/OR THE TAPE. DON'T EVEN TRY ON A NOT WELL WORKING OR BADLY CALIBRATED ATR100 TOO.

  • Pretty impressive. Spring assembly on the pinch roller assemblies? To keep the tape from wearing causing dips in speed. Thanks for demonstrating.

  • @bmuscotty88

This recorder is a pinchrollerless design. The capstan servo and reel servo is completely different from any other kind of recorder.

  • What did you stick in the tape up reel and why?

  • @Marantzguy

To demonstrate (again, the first time was at AES in NY in 1978) that this model can handle heavily unbalanced reels without any influence on sound (transport stability).
