Is that true? I'm British but he sounds as American as someone from Seattle does , maybe it's just my ears as the first thing I thought on hearing his accent was "He sounds like Mayor Quimby".

The closest american accent to colonial English is Tangier Island, Virginia and the outer banks of NC. About the 1770s, the British accent began to change. New England and the Boston area kept trade with English ports after the revolution, and they picked up a similar brogue, which is why the modern English and Boston accents sound similar. Originally, the standard English accent of the 1600s sounded more like a modern Cornish or west country accent.
