Part 2 of a series. See my other Subic Marine Videos!

This video was filmed by a news crew covering the closure of the Subic Bay Naval Base in the Philippines in 1993.

The beginning of this video shows a Marine from B company Marine Barracks, Subic Bay standing guard in a tower. This tower, perched on a cliffside overlooking the bay was known as Post 6, or "Papa 6". Typically the Papa 6 Marine was the senior Marine on that guard shift. This tower was very tall, upwards of 100 ft. If the Marine on guard in the tower needed supplies like a fresh radio battery or water, he would send his helmet down on a rope, where the COG, or Corporal of the guard would put items in the Helmet and they could be puled back into the tower. Post 6 was primarily on the lookout for illegal boats or swimmers. Also the usual jungle intruders on foot. Often nearby villagers would dynamite fish nearby. Legend was that a creature known as "red eyes" lurked in the jungle around Papa 6, and would come out at night. If you saw red eyes, it was the last thing you ever saw... One of many ghost stories that were widely known among Marines standing post or patrolling in the Nav Mag.

Also shown are some fast roping, and some live fire range video.

  • SGT WARNER, I use to be stationed with that guy.

  • My Country, given the series of events after US forces left, should've allowed the US forces to stay. Although there is a question of sovereignty, the fact that the SLP/AFP have been dependent to US security for so long leaves it a practical imperative for them to take care of security while the country develops its economy and technolgy. Now, we are under threat of Chinese coercion and possible invasion.

  • Thanks for posting this...brings back many memories!
